Deal or No Deal?

Hello,

I am a novice when it comes to the Hudson, but I really love the look of them. I am looking at purchasing one from a gentleman in Phoenix and I want to get everyones opinion on it. I don't have any other pictures and i have not seen the car yet. Has anyone dealt with this individual in the past?

I'm being told that the interior/exterior colors are original, but I'm having a hard time believing a green interior with a black cherry exterior. Can anyone confirm fact or fiction for me?

Thanks,

Jackson

If the car is a 1953 or 1954 model, the green (more like grey-green) interior would be correct.

Are you here in Phoenix? I'm in Scottsdale and know most of the members in the local HET club.

  • I'm in Mesa. Ellsworth and Baseline - does the HET club meet any particular day? Website?
  • Thats a nice looking car with some nice convenience features like AC and cruise. If you want a nice Hudson to cruise in and go to shows this looks fine. And yes you could order any interior color available for the 54's things were pretty loose in the final months of Hudson as a company before the merger.

If all the work is as stated the price is fair.
  • The only 54 color that this car may be is Royal Red.

    Jackson,

Send me an email @ NEChudsontech09@yahoo.com (drop the NEC) and I will send you by return email the 1954 Hudson specs - which include paint and upholstery listings.

Curious - the only red listed in the 1954 spec sheets is Lipstick Red.

As a two tone color it was used as the bottom color with Black being the upper color.

Alex - At the very beginning of the 1954 run, Hudson offered a Royal Red, a dark maroon similar to Toro Red of '52 & '53. Lipstick Red was not available at that time. When Lipstick Red became available, Royal Red was dropped.

They also offered a two tone with Lipstick Red of Coronation Cream top or bottom.

    Sorry, but you're wrong. :(
  • Alex,

I have a color spec sheet for the 54 Hudsons. It was put out by Acme Quality Paints and is referenced as Hudson Bulletin No. 19. There is no Lipstick Red listed thereon. The only red is Royal Red. There is a color close to red but it is labeled Roman Bronze.

I said "curious" because the information I have in the spec sheet came from one of the Hudson shop manuals.

The paint charts at Auto Library also show only Lipstick Red. So it appears either Royal Red (as someone said used on early '54s) or Lipstick Red (which replaced it) is correct.

  • Alex is correct. In April 54 Hudson released a tech note listing the new color combinations for 54 which included lipstick red. The option code was RX for Lipstick red upper and coronation creme lower. Another newly released color which does not appear on the color chips is Green Gold which was a lower color and Black was the upper this combo was coded RQ. I have all of the color chips for every year that Hudson produced cars and 54 does not represent the actual colors you could order. You have to look at the factory bulletins for these.

Oh and if you had ordered the CD's from Alex you could look this up yourself and enjoy the knowledge firsthand. The dealer bullentin with this info from the factory is DL.54-17

I found a folder with the 1954 bulletins in it. Royal Red is listed on page 7 of DL.54-1, dtd 8-28-53 (Suggested F.O.B. price list); DL.54-17, dtd 4-5-54, (New Color Combinations) shows "Option RX - formerly Roman Bronze-lower, Green Gold-upper" changed to "Coronation Cream-lower, Lipstick Red-upper.

Curiously Option "RX" as listed on the DL.54-1 bulletin is shown as Silver Blue-Lower, Beret Blue-upper for Models 2D, 3D, 5D and 7D.

Royal Red is shown only as Option RH, Royal Red-Lower, Black-Upper.

Copies of these bulletins maybe be obtained by dropping me an email listed below.

Jackson, it strikes me that the price he's asking -- while it may be reasonable when all things are considered -- is not exactly a 'steal', unless it's had a complete recent restoration. Have you investigated other Hudsons for sale and compared them to this? If this is only the first or second one you've seen, be aware that there are a large number for sale out there -- you just have to know where to look.

I'm not saying that this is not a good deal, but until you have 'played the field" you won't have any basis for a comparison in terms of condition or price.

Craigslist is fine, but you should also keep an eye on Ebay, Hemmings Motor News, the WTN (are you a Hudson club member?), Old Cars Weekly and Cars & Parts.

Also, are you aware of the Step-Down's 'Achilles Heel'-- the tendency for the perimeter frame to rot, aft of the rear wheel wells? Be sure to inspect all prospective Hudsons thoroughly for this condition. If the frame is solid, you're in good shape, and you can prevent any future rust, but if the frame is gone, you'll have several thousand dollars of body work to contend with.
