Does anyone know the thread size, or will all axle pullers be universal for my '50 Hudson? Thanks in advance.

This link discusses the rear drum pullers; The Ebay unit in the case looks just like the one I have used.

After the drums are off, you can reverse them and use them like a large slide hammer to pull the axles out.

Another tip that may be helpfull is to loosen the axle nut and drive the car around the block to help break the drums free before using the puller.

    Good luck,

Once the drum is removed (and after I've removed the bearing retaining bolts) I reinstll the hub nut with whatever large washer I can find. I then attach an eight or ten foot tow chain (the heavier, the better) tightly around the axle behind the nut. I then hold the free end of the chain while standing maybe six feet away from the axle and whip the chain with a substantial yank, and "pop" out comes the axle. The trick is to leave enough slack in the chain so that when you whip it (just as you might a real whip, in fact) the slack is taken up with great force right at the end where it's attached to the axle. Make sure you try a couple of lighter yanks initially to ensure that your chain isn't going to come off and you fall on your behind with a dent in the middle of your forehead. I've even used this method to pull drums when no puller was available, but it's quite putzy getting the chain to act evenly on the lug studs.
  • First thing you want to try is remove the bearing retainer( remove the 4 bolts) when you remove the retainer make sure you keep the shims in order and don't mix up sides so you put the retainer back on with the same amount of shims. Then put your drum back on and put the washer and nut on loosely but enough to hold. Then use the drum as a puller. Hold the sides of the drum and pull it back and forth against the nut with sharp pulls. After about 2 mins of this the axle should pop and you should be able to pull without much bother.

Just did my axles 2 weeks ago and this is how I pulled them. Done it this way on two other Hornets both came out the same way.

John, I don't like hammerring the bearing or the bore and keyseat of the drum. so I made a simple but effective puller from a piece of channel, a collar and a couple bolts and nuts to do the job. After pulling the drum retainer and shims it slides onto the axle and secures with the axle nut. I've pulled at least 7 axles with it this year. initially i didn't have the collar but the second axle had a spot of rust between the housing and cup and the rust proved to be stronger than the channel. here's what it looks like.

you can use a similar, welded to the axle to pull a broken axle. In that case, it can be easier to weld a bolt to the axle for attaching the puller as above so you can easily remove it to salvage the bearing (and puller).

I need to make one of those, definately a cleaner operation than using the drum.

Are any of you at all familiar with my tow chain method?
