That's some serious progress! Great looking car. Is he driving it yet?

I don't mean to be nitpicky, but are those the correct taillights? I thought the '39's had long, thin, vertical ones, somewhat like the '39 Plymouth? But maybe some models had the ones pictured...I dunno...
  • Thank you Dan for posting my photos, I have a lot of trouble with that.
Just to answer some questions and bring new readers up to date.

Yes this is the same car, if you go to page 2 of this Forum you will find the earlier version of this thread "39 Hudson Coupe" with more photos of the work.

The car has a 5.2 Litre Chrysler V8 and box, Chrysler New Yorker front Torsion Bar suspension, Custom 5 link rear suspension with coil-overs. The car is not yet road legal but does drive and is ready to go.

Those tail lights are aftermarket, the real ones can be seen here on eBay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Hudson-Terraplane-Tail-Light-Lens-Glass-New-Old-Stock_W0QQitemZ320163257222QQihZ011QQcategoryZ140741QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

but I missed them, the ones I have fitted are not much different and if I have to make a choice between waiting 10 years for originals to turn up, or fitting something like them, I know which way I will go.

Further nit-picking can be found on the hood, those Side-Spears with lights were only fitted to 8 cyl cars but I found a pair and liked them, and the turn indicators are aftermarket too. I didn't want to drill the body so found these which mount on chrome stalks.

The dashboard has still to be finished and an electronic speedo fitted.

The engine has Chrysler Computer controlled electronic ignition, I dissabled the mechanical fuel pump and fitted an electric pump in the trunk which vastly improved starting and running. I threw away all the emission stuff, EGR, Air pumps, Catalyst and all that rubbish, and made my own Stainless Exhaust.

The headlights have 7 inch sealed beam units fitted inside the original buckets and NOS Hudson outer lenses covering them.

The single Garage you see in the background is my place of work, there is just enough room for me to walk down each side of the car and one foot clearance end to end, all my work is done in there.

I will be happy to answer any questions.

    Jake.

No Nit-picking here:) Nice job. It's a bit of extra challange working in a small space.

  • I think it looks good, man, I got to say though, 39's are a tough love year for hudsons.... great job, but 39's are a lil homely, not as bad as an italia though.
  • I agree a little homely, but someone has to love the homely ones too (and they don't run off and leave you)

Now you're really making me feel like Rambo-Pu-Do, I've got a lot more room than that and I'm still complaining it's not enough!

    Jake,

I think your '39 Hudson cpe looks Fantastic and your choice of powertrain is great too because its not the norm or ez'ist route... I mounted my tail lights differently because I couldnt bring myself to drill the perfect fenders. Learning that you did all the work in a one car garage lends credence to an old saying...

(If you think you CAN succeed You WILL), despite any in-convenience or barrier.

Additionally, I suspect many of us also mix different yrs of parts to reconstruct our Hudson's and suspect only the minority do not. Keep up the motivation and Super Work....

  • I've always thought the '39 Hudsons were the best looking of all.

    Great job Jake.

I keep waiting for Rick to get started on his truck.

  • The coupes anmaybe converts had thse half ball tailights on them, BTW that's a very nice sealed beam conversion!

haha, I like that. She might still run off though, for a bigger garage. As for the changes I like them. Different is good! The tail lights do have me uncontrolably leaning my head though.:D

My hats off to you for getting anything done at all in that small of a space! Nice work. I'll never complain about my one and half car shop again. ...Well, at least not for the rest of the day.
  • Great job Jake!!! What a beautiful car. All that work done in such a small area. You HAVE certainly shamed us all!

I agree with Mark that 39's are the best looking of the bunch. But I'm only slightly prejudiced!

Rick, considering the frame problems of the tan '46, you might want to start on the '39!!! LOL
