'54 Hydramatic
I drained the transmission Sun. morning and replaced the fluid ( the fluid I drained looked very clean). I used Castrol for older vehicles Dex III. I filled til reading full on my dipstick...it took three quarts. I went for a little ride with no problems at all. Monday evening I went for a ride after work and while making a left turn the trans. shifted from first to second and made an awful clunking noise...going from second to third was fine as was third to fourth. It did it a couple of more times so returned home and checked my fluid and it's reading approx 1/8" to 1/4" over the full mark. Could this cause the problem I'm experiencing? The sound actually sounded like it was in the rear of the car to me, but all I've messed with is the transmission fluid. Thanks, Tommy T.

tommy did you put in 3 quarts or 3 gallons? the hydramatic takes 3 gallons (12 quarts) for a complete change. note that there is a drainplug in the torous and the pan to do so. I believe if you only drained the pan it will take more than 3 quarts to refill i'm thinking at least 6 or 7
as for your clunk, check your center driveshaft mounts.0 -
I put is three quarts and I'm reading over full on my dipstick. I only drained the pan.0

Am I supposed to check fluid with car running in neutral like the new stuff?0
-
Yes the fluid level is checked once the car is warmed up and running in neutral. If you run the car with low fluid bad things happen. Check it again while running I changed the fluid in mine and I drained the pan and needed to put in 10 quarts to bring up the level to correct.0

Also check your universal joints, all three of them!0

Checked my fluid again....THE CORRECT WAY!!!....Boy, do I feel stupid....took the better part of another gallon. And, Nick S hit the nail on the head....center driveshaft support. It was getting dark, so I couldn't see exactly what was going on, but when I lifted the driveshaft....CLUNK!....it hit underneath the car. I see K-gap has a rubber mount, but is there a "hanger bearing" also? Or, a complete kit that I missed? Thanks again, You all are a wealth of knowledge!! Tommy T0

The rubber components are part of the center bearing support. The center bearing rides on a center bearing cushion which consists of two rubber cushions and a bracket that they bolt to, the center bearing then bolts to this. Sounds like one or both of the cushions have broken down. Order a set from kgap and you can get the support back together.0

My Brother Remaned The Center Bearing On Our Dad's Car.i Know He Got The Bearing From Dave Kostansek(in Previous Forums Of Past Week)and The Rubber Cushions From Kgap0

here's a sketch of the center bearing for your reference. the item 14's are the mounts mentioned. the sketch refers to bolts but the stock mounts have an integral stud on each end. typical failure is displayed by a stud being pulled from the mount.0
