  • twin H in the trunk, and supa matic to boot!

did you get this one Rambos?
  • The license plate looks like an old Phillippines, or maybe Australia, tag; but of course, it's in the US. Someone started work on it, obviously, since the seat upholstery is new. Nice looking project for someone.

I went to go look at this car thinking about getting sheet metal parts to finish my car.

So as I'm looking at the car, I realize it's not pristine and has some of the usual rust but overall is in really nice shape and the old guy says it ran off the trailer 2+ years ago from a 1 gal can - but shortly after "something" happened and no forward or reverse.

I was trying to work him on the price but he was firm then I asked him if the trunk was locked and he said he never opened it.

So I tried what was left of the broken handle and it opened right up ~ I immediatley noted the Twin-H manifold and other stuff, some new seals, more hubcaps and a couple of carbs are poking around in there too I think!

    - I ended up giving him the asking price because of the condition of the car and the extra parts I thought it was worth the investment.

Should we start a poll to guess how much I paid for it?

Then another poll to guess what I'm going to do with the car? :D

That's an original 1950 Washington State License plate. The upholstery is just seat covers someone made - I don't really know yet if they're worth salvaging.

Why does it look like everything is always a bit wet there all the time. Not really like it rained, but like it's been drizzling for a few years or so?
  • Condensation - the bane of living in the Pacific Northwest. You get it all the time on everything. Lived in Tacoma for about a year and a half and had to park in base parking lots at McChord - had this problem all the time! Couldn't wait to leave that place!

It's pretty much like that here all the time!

Didn't have much of a Summer this year, barely got in the 90.s more than 1 or 2x. Summertime in the PNW is hard to beat for moderate temps and lots of fun things to do.

But this time of year this is what you get, then sometime in January you start regretting living here, then Summer rolls around and then you remember why you're still here!

Looks like a relatively easy driver project. Get the polls started.

    Dan,

With any "barn find" you also have to tell the story of how you found it. It's in the rules someplace, I think. Also, where in Wa. was it?

BTW, didn't make it much of anyplace with my '48 this summer- To many barn projects for the Mrs.'s horses. Didn't even get to a single car show, even as a spectator. Hope to get up to visit next summer. . .

  • Hi Dan & Mike,

Congratulations on barn find, I'm sure you'll make a great car of it...I was curious about earlier post & Philippine license plate, years ago when I first was in Manila, country had some old (like me) Packard's, in fact one was our great past General McArthur's staff car. My old 53 Hornet coupe shipped to Peoria, AZ., last Nov. '06 is still for sale, price reduced to $2,800.00 I do remember and tried engine turned freely by hand. Looking for a good condition '52 coupe left/right quarter panels, also usable pork chops and rear directional light bezels and maybe a hood, anybody who has items and attending Laughlin meet I'd be interested to learn condition and price.

    Thanks,

    Ray

    Hi Mike,

Unfortunately not much of a story, let's see if I can make it one...

I've been saving money to buy a new truck when I noticed the car listed locally, in Silverdale, on Craigslist and not too far from my house.

I emailed back, thinking I might be able to use the car for sheet metal parts depending on the condition.

I asked to see some pictures and a day later I got 4 blurry photos sent to me. I could tell the car had a visor was all there and relatively straight so I called them yesterday morning and went to look at the car.

The CL listing said the car ran, but when I got there the guy said he last ran it a couple of years ago when he started and drove it off the trailer.

I was the first person to look at the car for one thing, always a good thing when trying to snatch a "barn find"

The couple said they purchased the car at an auction and that it was one of the Lemays collection (obviously not restored) that the old man had before he passed away and auctioned off a lot of vehicles.

They couldn't provide me any documentation to that point and had no paperwork with the car

So as I'm kicking the tires I asked the guy if the trunk was locked, because I noticed the handle was broken - he said he never opened the trunk (?) so I tried the handle and the trunk opened easily.

Of course the first thing I noticed was the TwinH manifold, and everything is pretty much there, spare tire cover, seals (might not be all of them) a couple of carbs, and other misc parts.

Once the guy saw the TwinH I think he was a little mad a himself for not knowing it was there, I know you could easily sell it seperately.

At that point I'm thinking I could use the doors and rocker panels on my 49 and sell the Visor and the TwinH to recoup part of my costs - so I agreed to purchase the car for full asking price - in spite of the little nagging voice in my head "You don't need another project...you don't need another project..."

When I went back to get the car, the more I looked at it, the more I am convinced that if I can get the car driveable that I'll won't part it out but do a driver level restoration on it, drive it for a while and if needed sell it later to finance the remainder of the 49 project build.

Another thing about getting this car running is that it would allow me my "fix" which is have something to drive and play with sooner and would free me from my current modest plans on the 49 to "take it to the next level" with chopping the top and some other metal work.

Then Rambos Ride will be the full-on custom it's always wanted to be, not the scaled back version I was targeting to just get a driver.

Time will tell, but for now there's another Hudson in the stable, and I'm a little poorer! :D

  • actually looks like a saver, I would hate to think a car this decent would be a donor car. Get it running, and see what you're missing with rodding a hudson. This one would take little effort to get it driving and on the road. Pull the supermatic crap, put on the twin H, and go to town....
