49 Super Six dash

Hi,

I think I know what the correct answer to this question is but I don't have access to any information to verify it. I thought I would let the someone in the forum with more experience tell me. I purchased a 1949 Super Six two years ago and the trim is all correct but for the two plaques on the glovebox doors. My plaques are for the Commodore. Otherwise the dash appears all orginal even the wood grained paint. My basic feeling is that Hudson would not have allowed someone to order a Super Six with the Commodore plaques on the dash.

I have noticed one or two other cars for sale that were in the same state of trim as mine. Could this trim conditon be original to the car or is it a case of parts swapping?

I have managed to acquire a passenger side Super Six plaque but haven't found a drivers side one yet. I figure I would ask about the validity of the plaques before I changed them for Super Six plaques.

  • Drew , your gut feeling is correct. The 48-9 Super 6/8 came with two hard plastic glovebox emblems that were of the ship and castle motief. I believe they were black and silver, I'm not totally sure. Hudson didn't have any chrome glovebox trim on the Supers. However with the passing of 60 years of time who knows when they were changed over. On the question of whether the trim could have been ordered from the dealer, there is a chance but it's slim. Most times if anything was ordered from a dealer for a Super it was the larger Commodore tailights or wheelcovers.
  • Thank you very much for the confirmations of my suspicion. I have the super six passenger side glove box trim in hand. I will keep looking for the drivers side super six trim. I have the Commodore "mustache" bar on my radio too so that pretty well clinches the parts swapping deal. Of course it is quite easy to do and there is no harm done to the car. Think I'll keep the mustache bar and replace the glove box trim. That will mean parts for someone else in need. Thanks again!
