Motor Mount Frustration

I purchased (2) AMC type motor mounts from NAPA for my stepdown. The number that's been circulating for this is MM-2280. This number now references 2 new part numbers. The new number 602-1161 looked to be the right one, so I ordered 2 in. I opened one when I picked them up, it looked correct so I took them home. When I got home, 1 of them was totally the wrong part with 2 opposing studs. NAPA ordered in 1 more. It was yet different than the "correct" one that I had. The rubber part was about 1/8" lower and it had two dowels pins on the top on either side of the stud. They ordered 2 more from another store. When these came in, they didn't match either. This one was 1/8" taller and different construction. Luckily, the other of the pair matched the original one I bought.

Moral of the story, If you go this route, make sure you get a matching pair of motor mounts. There are at least 3 variations of the 602-1161, and even more if you use the MM-2280 number. I believe most of this is due to manufacturing tolerances and different manufacturing facilities. The slightly higher cost from HET vendors would have been well justified. If I were in a hurry, I would have been stuck.

I will say overall I have good luck with NAPA parts being correct and well priced. This is my first negative experience, but beware.

I learned to check them before I leave the store too.

last year when i switched to the amc mounts i bought a pair off the shelf at advance. once I got home and was trying to find the right nuts - (of course i figured i had them so I didn't buy them while I was there- WRONG.) anyway I decided to check the second mount to be sure it was the same thread before I went to the store. When I grabbed the second it felt light. I wasn't imagining it, the base plate was half as thick and the rubber was considerby less dense. dimensionally both mounts would have worked, but they would have performed completely different as the one was much softer. i looked at the boxes, they both carried the same number in the same type box but the stuck on labels were different- possibly a different factory or just different production runs. any way I took the pair into a different store - they checked there inventory and all matched the heavier. I think it may actually have been a case of mixed stock and truly different parts. Perhaps different amc applications such as 6 vs 8 i really don't know.

One of Murphy's Law corollaries is "Interchangeable parts exhibit fundamental differences". For the small amount of $ saved, and the frustration of having to sort things like this out, surely it is better to purchase a part form the likes of K-Gap, who have the correct part, guaranteed to fit.

  • geez... i can tell you guys a story about mounts...

best to tell you all, just give the good folks at KGAP your $$$$ and use the correct mounts.

Agreed. My reason for posting my experience was so that others might save the hassle and take your advice. We'de be in sad shape without vendors like k-gap, it's very important that we support them to keep true OEM fit parts on the shelf.

    Lesson learned.
