Glen Johnson is an HET club member from Utah. He has found a good chrome shop and he tries to get stuff done resonably and pass it on to others. He had some pieces at the All CA meet in September and it looked pretty good to me.0

Call Press Kale (number in the HET Club Directory) and ask who he uses local to you. I had my (non-stepdown) bumpers done by his guy a couple of years ago and I was happy with the results and price, but can't find the invoice to give you the info. :cool:0

This summer I had a '52 front plus the 4 grille pieces for $610. I had the rear 3 pieces done for $375 and the Horse collar for $120. I bought three NOS or replated large guards from Duluey at Doc's for about $180?? I had an NOS front horse collar that I bought at Hershey the other year for $200. I like to buy NOS, Prepare and send good cores that I repair myself, or SEE the item before buying. I had a BAD experience trying to buy a replated item for a hudson on Ebay. (off a frequent Hudson seller) Sounds like Russ's price guidelines are right on the $$$$$. If you're not happy with the piece, it is no bargain, no matter how good the deal!0

Buyer Beware, Caveat Emptor....
More often than not, I heard tales of eBayers, getting rechrommed hudson parts off eBay, where the part would not fit, or were flawed, or waited, or even the part really didn't exist. Then to find that if they got the part, at all, and were unhappy, had to pay return shipping as well as the original shipping. Ouch, heavy chrome parts, that adds up.
eBay has lots of sellers, some good, some bad.
As far as the person selling a part, being a member of the HET club, does not guarantee you will have the same experience as others.
Unless the HET club officially endorses a reseller, offers a money back guarantee, or any other endorsing members will do likewise, approach any transaction with the same caution as you would, whether they were a member or not, key word, caution.
It would be nice to think that HET club membership meant the same to everyone that was a parts supplier, reseller, but it does not. For the majority of the good apples, there is always that one or two that blemishes the bushel, unfortunately. I will add, from my experience, most all of the members seem to have the rest of the HET club's best interest in sight.
There are multitudes of members, that have devoted hours, and significant portions of their life, to make the club what it is, and I applaud them.
And there are a few that have used the club as a device to take advantage of others in the hobby, whether it is with shabby parts of service, know who you hand your hard earned money to.
Hudson community is small, and a few bad transactions will definitely get heard, forever, until the seller tries to make right.
You will get a range of feedback on this board, some good some bad, in the end the choice is yours. Ask the questions, read the replies, do a search on specific sellers, here. good way to check someone's track record.
Click "search forum" and add a seller's name, if you don't know....0 -

Thanks to all for their feedback. I think I know where to go from here.0 -
Anyone ever deal with Bumper Boyz? I know there located in California but travel to all the big swap meets. They have the bumpers and guards I need for my 41 hudson at what I thought was a reasonable cost. [Under 1,000 for everything]The car is going to be a driver, not a museum car, so i'm not looking for show chrome.

Hudsonkid,
I think you covered all the bases really well. Problems ranging from those with chromed parts to a guy who walked off with someone elses carb are well known to the regulars here. I've leared my lesson with rechroming and take good cores to a local shop. Should there ever be a question or problem, I can deal with them head on, face to face with the owner. And, I know what the quality of the cores I'm taking in is so that I don't wind up with mangled, patched up crap someone is hawking to make a fast buck.
I too have heard many horror stories from people who dealt with B Boys. At last years Iola car show, their rep almost got his butt kicked by some irrate customers who were in attendence.0 -
I think hudsondad has some experience with bumper boyz....
if nothing else, they have an established price list, and really the prices are not terrible. If you shop around, you can do better, both in quality, and price.0 -

AS a matter of fact, I have a recent experience with BB. I have a 40 chevy business coupe that I bought 2 years ago. It had a decent grille that was bumped a good wack in the center bending several of the 18 curved sheet metal bars. I spent about 6 hours straightening it but still have 2 bars with a slight twist. I can probably get it straight with a couple more jigs and forms and anothe 4-5 hours. The core is pretty nice otherwise. I've searched Hershey and Carlisle for a couple years and found no suitable cores. Lots of 41's cheap and only bent or rotted 40's. "Chevy's of the 40's" have a laser cut grille for around $600 but it looks crummy. In May I ordered a 40 grille from bumper boyz figuring they would be able to find nice california cores. (Everyone including BB tells me they are a difficult year to find a good core) They promised it for Chryslers at Carilse in early July and charged my card for $300. (Total price was $600 plus other fees for $653 total). I got a call right before CC and they said it wasn't done, still at the platers. They promised it would definitely be at Corvettes at Carlisle. I went to Corvettes at the end of August and they didn't have it. Still at the platers. I wasn't happy but they promised it for Fall Carlisle in October. The called two weeks before FC and said it was done. Something like $80 to ship. I told them I'd pick it up at FC and I did. The grill is very nice and the core was a good one. BB, on they're new price list now have 40 Chevy grilles at $750. BB, like a lot of platers that do large volumes of business have their share of disatisfied customers. I observed several unpleasant interactions happening at the stand at Fall Carlisle. If you check the forums, you'll easily find post from disatisified customers. Their prices are on the higher side also for Hudson stuff. I think for the most part the quality of their stuff is good, but the service and communications that I experienced with this one transaction was not what I expected. (I did not trade a core which increased the price to the $600)0 -
If it is any consolation, I saw the finished product, and they in fact turned a nice product. I would say that I know they are selling items they don't have in stock. They know what it costs them to plate a specific item, an they know what a core should run them. I guess that it's okay, if you're in the business of finding the items, regardless, but it doesn't work as well if you are an eBay seller (funny, we made this whole conversation, full circle)
Probably in hudsondad's case, if they would have said, hey, we won't have this thing anytime soon, we'll need to let you know perhaps by fall carlisle, I bet the whole transaction would have been smoother. It wasn't like this was the final item needed for the car, so a bit of up front honesty would have gone miles. I can imagine they were scrambling for a core, to plate for several months. I bet they figured they would find one fairly quick, I guess they were wrong.
I think the best thing to do is find NOS chrome, or early take offs. If you need something plated, consider having several different levels of chrome platers at your disposal... I would think that one plater can do your bumpers, they might be the bulk priced plater... have a higher level plater for grille bars, and less involved items, this will be your mid price level plater, and for highly detailed items, or fragile items, thin items (like 52- 3 taillight pieces, front parking lights, etc....) have high end plater that will make the parts right, and unfortunately, will be priced the same.0
