Pertronix problem

Okay, so I got the ignitor ignition 1362P6 which is what is called for with the Autolite distributor. Big dummy me I left the car outside the yard in the driveway while I pulled the points and condensor to prepare for the new pertronix ignition. At this point I discover it won't go into the distributor, It seems the connector for the points that comes up from the backing plate is in the way, I think the arm from the vacuum advance will be in the way also, not sure about that until I can get the ignition down to the plate, which I can't do with the bracket sticking up from the backing plate. Don't ask me why I start these projects on a Saturday afternoon. With the sun setting in the west I had to put the points and condensor back into the distributor and get it running well enough to put it into the fenced yard. The points were pitted so I buffed them lightly with points file but now I'm not real confident in the hookup for the power to the points. I got the car timed correctly again and it's running but whoever did this last didn't do a clean job with putting things together, the wire from the coil wasn't a good job but I'll get rid of all that when I get the ignitor in. Has anyone else done this and had to deal with that bracket? The number on the distributor is correct for this car but the pertronix part sure isn't correct. I guess I'll find out what I should do on monday but I don' think I'll drive it much until then.

  • If you look in the box that the 1362P6 ignitor came with you should see a little piece of paper that explains you have to remove the points bracket. You will see the two rivets you drill these out enough to remove the bracket. Then the ignitor installs no problem. I have installed the 1362P6 in two distributors and removed the points bracket in both. Means you can't readily go back but so far I have not needed to. I have a spare points distributor in the trunk and it has not been used yet. 2 years and counting.

While you have the distributor out pull it apart and check the bushing and clean and lube it. Don't try and do this with the distributor in the car bring the engine up to TDC and remove the distributor and do it on the bench.

Make sure you have the proper distributor to begin with. The early stepdown distributors are interchangeable, and may have been substituted in the past. In that case, the Pertronics will not fit.

  • Yeah, I thought I was going to have to remove the bracket but no little paper in the box explaining that and the instruction sheet says no modification to the distributer is necessary. This is the hardest car I've ever owned to get to UDC, the 55 Hash doesn't have TDC

The distributor matches as far as the numbers go and since this is a 55 Hash I don't have the early stepdown issue, I think 51HornetA has the answer I'm looking for, it just would have been nice if that little paper would have been in the box.

    Thanks guys, Harry
  • I can scan the ones I have and post if you like. Its just a little page that basically says oh by the way you have to remove the plate. Kind of funny as they do say no mods except for Hudson people...LOL I admit I was a little apprehensive the first time when I removed the plate.
  • Yep, I removed the plate and installed the ignitor, piece of cake but now I need to find a back up distributor. Now I'm in the process of replacing the thermostat, mine was stuck open so the car wouldn't heat up correctly. Better than stuck closed I guess. I think the high speed jet on my front carb isn't feeding, the car idles great and without a load revs nicely but dogs out under a load. Acceleration isn't bad but the top end isn't right and climbing it is gutless. I can hear the back carb feeding fuel with the aircleaner off but I can't hear the front.
