Another Twin-H Question.. Kick down?

I have a 51 Hornet Coupe with twin-H and hydamatic. When I floor it at speed, shouldn't it engage the "kick down" and take off like a bat outta hell?

As of now, there is no such engagement. Niels

When you press the accelerator pedal to the floor, you should feel a increased resistance through the pedal as the throttle reaches the wide open position. This indicates that the detent plug is moving the T valve to the downshift position.
  • Yes, it should kick down at speeds below 60 mph. The shop manual shows the following conditions which cause "Improper Throttle Downshift"

    Linkage

    Oil Pressure

    Control valve assembly

    Governor

    Front oil pump
  • Are you guys saying the hydramatic third gear will run up to 60? I guess I won't know until I get this high end carb problem fixed. I'm going to pull the front carb and check the jets to see if they're plugged. I have a feeling I have a high speed needle restriction of some kind. I passed a drill through the jets when I rebuilt them but something is keeping the fuel from getting to the high end.

  • The first thing that I would do is to check the linkage adjustment, starting with the carbs, if that is correct adjust throttle pressure-rod. Instructions for this are on Ken Cates web site. Also make sure throttle pressure lever on trans is not bent to drivers or passenger side. Where it comes down from trans adjusting rod from linkage cross shaft it should run straight. The lever should be bent towards the front of car. If lever is bent to either side, remove from trans and clamp in vise and use crescent wrench to straighten out. good lucl Lou Cote
