I got tanked today
I picked up my freshly cleaned fuel tank today. I was amazed at how much scale was in the tank when I first pulled it. I thought because the tank had set empty I had avoided the varnish problem and I did but because of condensation in the tank sitting empty there was a lot of rust scale, the tank is still strong and no holes and I rinsed it with Marvel Mystery Oil to stop any rusting until the fuel sending unit gets here, I don't want to have to drop the tank again in a week just to install the unit so I'll leave it out until I receive a package from Paul, though I do miss driving the old girl right now, and I still haven't driven her to my first cruise in, which will be next friday if I get the sending unit.

Paul;
good deal, I'll look for it about Wednesday, I had the tank boiled and acid washed then flushed with hot soapy water. Now it is coated with Marvel Mystery Oil on the inside and sealed up waiting for the sending unit. We may have rain on Tuesday or Wednesday so the tank may have to come inside to wait for the float assembly. I'm going out now to pull the tops off the carbs to see how the inside of the bowls look. I still need to get the high end of the carb feeding right.

Check that flapper valve on the top that opens and closes to see if it seals off when closed that we were talking about on "Terraplane woes",looks like that should have a gasket of some kind on it , How about some more input on the gasket question guys.0

I think you are talking about the anti cavitation valve. I think it's purpose is to stop the fuel from foaming in the bowl when a lot of fuel is going in, it opens under high throttle opening to stabilize the fuel. I could be wrong on this. I'm hoping one of our carb experts will set me straight if I am.

That's the w-1 carter, right ? According to Chuck with the Terraplane woes it is open at idle/closes under acceleration and can only work one way, yes somebody that really knows this carb needs to jump in here for both of these guys0

Yep; it looks like we are really confused. I thought the valve openned under acceleration, and yes we are talking about the W-1 carbs

That's an 'Anti-perculation valve'. It's purpose is to let atmospheric pressure into the bowl at idle or when you shut it down.
What you have is hot fuel and air in the bowl. When the air cools, it will create a vacuum unless the valve is open to atmosphere, and boil (perculate) the liquid gas into the throat.
By the way, when the screen gets plugged up or there is too much heat in the fuel pump, it creates an undue vacuum on the liquid gas causing it to vaporize (boil) and thats a liquid pump and won't pump vapor. Thus much of the so-called vapor lock.0 -
Thanks Uncle Josh, I knew someone would set me straight on that. For some reason I thought mine was closed at idle and openned when I openned the throttle. Now I have to go out and look at it in the daylight.
