engine weight?

You really should consider renting an engine hoist.0

Like Dave said for the price of a rental it would be a better idea, unless you have some pretty heavy duty beams. I put my engine and trans. in my 37 Terraplane a couple years ago as one unit with a good engine lift and it was a strain on it. those motors look small but they are a chunk of real iron! Chuck G0

I'd "second the emotion" for the hoist -- one with wheels. Back in '78, I pulled and reinstalled a splasher engine with overdrive, as a unit, by myself, using a hoist on casters, with the hand-pumped hydraulic lift. I was able to do it all with absolutely no help. With casters, you can maneuver the engine (since it's not just a matter of lifting vertically; you have to push it back toward the rear as well).
You might check rental prices and then ask around amongst your local H-E-T chapter or AACA region members, to see if you could make a deal to borrow someone's hoist for a bit less money. Then everybody's happy!0 -
I pulled a splasher and tranny as a unit last week with an engine hoist on casters and had no problems at all. It did help that the front clip and grille were off the car.
Just out of curiosity can anyone answer the gentleman's question. I too would like to know what the weight of a splasher with the transmission
attached is. I'm betting in the 1250 lb range.0 -
1250 lb would be alittle high i think a 427 chev. motor and trans . does not weigh that much. The splasher does not balance very well compared to a large v-8 so they feel heavier than they are. I would like to load one up in my pick-up and take it to the grain elevator and have them weigh it but we are in the middle of harvest season and they wont put up with my crap now!

I don't know about the splasher but a 308 with a BW trans runs right about 650 pounds.

650 is probably about right; that's about the same as a fully loaded Pontiac V8 or small Chevy.. really most of your iron V8s are in the 550-700 lb range. Supposedly the Chevy 235 6 weighs closer to 1000 lbs, but it does have that big OHV head on it too.0

i can lift my t86 OD on my own (not struggling)and there is no way in hell that a splasher would way 1000lb so im guessing 1250lb is really high. a 308 is 700lb give or take.0

Many of the chain parts stores (AutoZone for sure) let you borrow tools such as engine hoists. You just have to have a credit card that they do not charge unless you break the tool or steal it.
So its free...doesn't get any better than that.0
