1953 Hudson Hornet Supercharger Update

Based upon Rudy Bennett's request and my personal curiosity, today I visited FFP who is working on completion of turbo supercharged 1953 Twin-H Powered engine, I met the owner Gary Simon and his son Eric who were kind enough to let me take a few pictures and discussed the engine build…Both father & son were up until 3:00 AM this morning working to satisfy customer’s request for car to be ready for Las Vegas Gold Coast show this Saturday, most of cars attending show will be rat rods; this Hornet surely will get plenty of attention . With time consuming fabrication, machine work and ordering parts the shop only having Hornet for two months will complete for show…If I was the owner I’d be smiling from ear to ear with pride of ownership; what a great shop and professional staff. Speedway location is where a lot of race’s and small aircraft shows are held and Shelby Auto is also located around track. I’ve taken the liberty to copy (see below) and post what Gary who has worked on many Hudson in the past & his son Eric have accomplished to date and if interested in following go to there web-site:

www.fastandfuriousperformance.com

I can’t write enough and explain how impressed I was with the Hornet, if I still had my 1953 Hornet coupe I would surely considered this shop for build and restoration requirements, great clean professional workmanship with attention to detail and with Twin-H set up. I saw about eight different cars on lifts in different stages of build/restoraton. Gary mentioned if I need any help or support with my ’52 Hornet coupe I shouldn’t hesitate in calling him. For his reference I also promised to forward Gary Hudson FORUM web-site tonight.

For those of you who PM me about what shop I used for my chrome plating work; from past poor experience of dealing with other Vegas shops (lost, broken parts, shoddy work taking inordinate amount of time) I have now found and only use American Polishing & Plating located in Henderson, NV.

(702) 307-4552 or americanpolishingplating.com see picture example of workmanship of poor core I brought to them. With repair, polishing and triple plating I had piece returned in seven days. I am in the market for good driver side porkchop anyone who has and wants to sell one, please PM me.

Thanks,

Ray

  • I really like the serpentine belt system on the front of that engine. I'm more than curious to see how the engine performs. It would appear some serious boost could be had by that particular supercharger.

The folks at the show will love that car. Even though the crowd is more nostalgic than new age, any flathead engine given that much attention will likely steal the show.

I'm curious as to how the breathers turn out.

    Mark
  • I went to the website and answered my own question about the breathers.

    Isn't this gorgeous?

Thanks RAY,GARY,ERIC, That is the MOST,now if I could win the Lotto befor I get to old. (im there) Two--To-3 Turbos on my 51, and just Drive the Pistons down through the Oil-Pan ? ( just a dreaming )

Mark, How are you doing on your installition ?

I left the Gasket out of the Compressor cover (on the rear) and used liquid Gasket to seal it. I was told by a long time Rebuilder that this would bring the Boost up just a bit.

    Thanks to all Rudy
  • Wow... what a great engine. I can only imagine the interest it will cause at any car show. And, what a tribute to the Marque.
  • Well Rudy, I'm moving kinda slow.

I have located the parts I need to finish. Have the belting/pulleys etc. figured out, I just need to turn loose of the money to get the final pieces.

Which I'm finding it hard to do these days.

I do need a double sheave Hudson crank pulley with the outer sheave lip cracked. That is one thing I have not laid my hands on. This is one of those cases where a damaged Hudson piece can find new life. The same pulley Ralph used will work for me, after I machine off the outer sheave lip and use the remainder of the outside sheave to mount the McCulloch blank pulley from Paradise wheels.

The blank supercharger pulley is $175. Carb hat/bonnet $175. The list grows in little pieces till the bill gets up toward $600.

    Sooo, I'm a ways off.

    Mark
  • All I can say is WOW. That is fantastic.

Someone mentioned winning the lottery...I think I just found the first thing I would buy......

    Great Looking work, Top Notch!

We need to get someone to design you a new Hornet Turbo Emblem to replace the badges on the car!

    What size carb is that?

Curious, have you thought of TBI or FI to go along with the turbo?
  • Good Morning Dan,

I wish the car and new set-up was mine, it belong's to someone who lives in Los Angeles or at least that what Gary Simon shop owner @ www.fastandfuriousperformance.com informed me. I forwarded him your web-site for him to see the great building/fabrication you have been working on...Carb in one four barrel and if I get to meet the owner I'll try and get you answers to last question; car and owner are suppose to attend Gold Coast Casino Hotel car show, which I plan to visit this afternoon...Not too impressed with rat rod show, however I want to see this Hornet again, if so I'll take some more pictures and post on FORUM, I know spoke wheels don't make the car run better, but it sure makes vehicle look good, this Hudson Hornet has original sparkling set. Great rechrome/stainless job, (something I almost have completed on my car) power coated under hood support, with WWW tires; owner with pride did a great job and car reflects details of inputted TLC.

For the purpose to see and talk with owner of supercharged turbo 1953 Hudson Hornet I attended rat rod car show at Gold Coast Hotel yesterday. Show is getting larger every year was jammed packed with vendors, people and some great looking modified and original cars from 1930’s through 1960’s, music was loud but good, men & women dressed resembling attire of the ’50 I realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I don’t remember seeing people in old days covered with body tattoo’s, in fact in those days only hard street people, drunken sailors, seamen, ex cons etc., fashioned tattoo’s; only my personal opinion I believe as this younger generation grows older, they’ll regret ink used on their bodies. Some of the restored cars I saw I owned and the show brought back fond memories and nostalgia, I must admit some of the builder’s of cars had a great deal of imagination and Detroit could use their creative talent, but again only my opinion other wannabee’s car’s were one step away from scrap metal yard.

For this one day Rockabilly show, owners I spoke with drive, use trailer’s etc, and come from all over the USA. I only saw one Hudson and I remember this car from earlier year’s shows; owner wasn’t around but he drives it from Los Angeles every year I attended show; Isee two pictures of this nice original restoration. Unfortunately after walking up and down every aisle I didn’t see the 1953 Hornet and assume owner didn’t attend show, next week I’ll drive to speedway shop again and talk with shop owner? Appeared to me new cottage industry growing with vendors booths selling everything you can think of related to America’s time frame of these great steel, chrome plated machines. On the way to the show, I picked up some small chrome pieces for my interior sun visor courtesy light bezels I dropped off only a week ago at www.americanpolishingplating.com. Hoping to continue and get some work done on my ’52 this mid week.

The whole Supercharger Set-up is Awsome looking with all the chrome, serpintine drive, and the utilization of the stock Air Filter Assembly... Neat...

Hope to see more on the Car later
  • Like Ray, I went over to Viva Vegas to check out the supercharged '53. I couldn't find it either, I was afraid I missed it, but he mustn't have had it in the show if Ray couldn't find it either. I did see the two flat black Hudsons owned by the guy that posts here every once in a while (sorry I can't remember your name). They had the roof painted pink on their stepdown, looked pretty good. There was also a '27 Hudson chopped and sectioned with a Studebaker V8 in it. Last but not least, there was a rat rod truck - I have no idea what it really was - but it had a Terraplane grill. Does that count as a Hudson??LOL

Sorry I don't have any pics, I forgot my camera. I'll try harder next time....
  • The flat black Hudson with the "Pink" top is a 1953 Super Wasp sedan. Application of the metal flake paint job to the top and side window area was the subject of a "How to Do, paint tech article" in one of the new Rat Rod magazines I recently read at Books a Million.
  • Then there are two pink and black stepdowns. This one is a '49 (or '48).
  • Hello, my name is Bill Biler and I own Trixxy and have driven her daily for 20 years. Originaly I had Wayne Ballerstine from Concord Cal do a full Stroker on her but even with all the standard Hop Up Gear she fell on her face around 120 miles an hour (on Radar). I ordered a Clifford head and bought a matching four barrel intake on ebay. I polished them and Jet Hot coated the header system along with installing lower compression pistons. I spent about 2 years figuring out how to build and what combination to use for the final assembly. The famous Tom Gunter (race car builder from Northern Cal) helped me tear her down but had a stroke before we could put her back together. I thought for sure I would have to deal with a HOT ROD shop that would not understand that I wanted a car I could drive daily and still run at Boneville Speed Week. But as fate would have it I had just moved from Danville Cal to Las Vegas to purchase the Arlen Ness Las Vegas Motorcycle Dealership and one of the first things I did was to look for a shop to get Trixxy back in action. I found it, Fast and Furious Performance out at the Race Track and Gary the owner. Gary has not only built Hudsons in the past but is a Professional Race Car Builder in his own right. I talked with him and explainded what I wanted to have happen and he has exceeded all of my expectations. If someone would like to come by for a ride in her just give me a call @ 702-556-0888 cell or work 702-440-6377. PS if you wanted to know what just passed you it was Trixxy. :) Parts (Paxton Novi 1200, Demon Barry Grant Blow throught 575, and a whole lot of help from some really smart people.
  • Bill, mighty fine car, I'm going to write down your number so if I get to Vegas I can have a ride. I'm just not sure when that is going to be.

    Hello Bill,

    Welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on the Arlen Ness Dealership purchase, that must be keeping you busy!

Really great looking work and vision with the Hudson - you've given us all plenty dream about!

    Dan
  • Really nice to have you on the forum Bill, and certainly Trixxy as well.

What a fantastic car. I can't wait to hear the road reports on the engine's performance.

Any daily driver with a performance purpose has my admiration.

    Welcome and visit often.
