36 Steering Gear Seal

Hi Howard,
I had Al Saffrahn rebuild mine and it leaks also. I will email you the name of the product that I am using, that seems to have slowed the leak down.0 -
Thanks Richard, I am going to some parts houses to see if I can find some
part that would seal around the 1 inch output shaft. I figure I could then be able to seal the part against the steering gear box. I'll let you know if I have any success.
See you in San Jose.0 -
Just for fun, would you have some dimensions on that seal? Some of us might have access to the catalogs of companies selling shaft seals, and we might be able to find an off-the-shelf item worth testing. If it worked, a number of us might want to buy them!
One company would be McMaster-Carr at http://www.mcmaster.com/ .
Type 3396 (th page number) in the search box at left and click the arrow. The following four or five pages also have shaft seals.0 -
On my 36 the output shaft is 1.00 in. dia. It could take a seal up to 1.625 in.
OD. The seal could not be pressed into the housing face since there is not enough
of a lip to hold it. I thought of putting Permatex between the body of the seal
and the housing and hoping the spring would hold it in place enough to stop
the leaking. I am using 140 wt. oil now. I will probably try something even heaver. Howard0 -

Mike the size of the shaft and the ID of the steer box, and 3/16 thick. The OD of the seal is metal. Take those measurements to a place called (BEARING ENGINEERING) and you will get the correct seal. I get all my steering box seals here. 8's take a different size seal. All sixes have bronze bushings on the sector shaft while the 8's and long wheel base cars take two torrington needle bearings. Walt Mordenti , Walt's Garage. Is there a source for the steering gear output shaft seal on a 36 Terraplane?
What material could be used to make one?
The material I used is still allowing the heavy oil to leak out.
