Electric windows
Someone in the HET sells new windshields and electric window kits for 48 - 54 stepdowns (and possibly others).
If I install electric windows, what style of switch was used, and where were they places on the doors?
My car seems to have a place on the driver's side door panel where a block of 4 switches might have been mounted. I have a Super Six, which has rolldown windows. But the door sheet metal was probably used for all derivations of my car, including Commodore.

Indeed all the doors are the same. Here is a shot of an electric switch on a 'vert. The four-plex switch would be mounted in the same location of the driver door.0

Forgot to ask, who is it that is supplying the electric windows? I'm still torn on whether to put the hydraulic windows back in the convertible or to retro-fit electric ones. The system is going to be on 12V, so juice won't be a factor.0

Electric Window Kits
I have installed two types. One I eliminated everything inc. the wing window installing a one piece Glass in my '47. Its was simple requiring drilling a couple holes for the brackets and re routing the front channel. The motor mounted low and cable driven. Need to drill a 1/2' hole in the door between hinges. The wiring is all plugs & play.(Cant go wrong) I added a 1 touch relay like new cars have. The Illuminated Buttons mount anywhere you choose in the door panel.
The second installation in my '37 I bought an 'add on' power window Kit from JC Whitney because my regulators were all good. I was suprised how simple and nice of an installation it was... Saw off the door handles then slide a cable operated gearbox on the handle nubbin then plug the hole and mount the motor in the bottom of door. The Wiring was all plug & play with illuminated buttons too. The Unit mounts flush with the door panel and comes wih various size plugs to paint or upholster...
I also added door locks which became time consuming because the '37 'horizontal pull' to lock required re figuring the geometry. (Dor locks normally are vertical) I also added the 1 touch relay. Both power windows Kits work flawlessly...0 -

Excellent. Can you give info on where to find both kits. Also, illuminated switches sound great, but I hope they are chrome colored or some such as to attempt to look somewhat 40s ish. I can look around for switches I suppose.
I'll try to find my info too. A Hudnut in the Northwest (as I recall) posts windshields (which I also need) on eBay from time to time. When I called a hear ago, I found out that they also provide electric window kits.

Two Guys Garage had an episode on Sunday on installing electric windows in a 39 Chev. They used the original handles for the authentic look, which were mounted on a switch to control the window. It was installed where the original regulator went and when you lifted up on the handle the window went up and pressed down the window went down. Additional switches were mounted under the dash so the driver could operate the passenger window and power door lock, the rear windows were left stock.
What I liked about the set up was that until you went to operate a window it looked stock original. You could probably go to their web site to find the episode or the type of switches they used.0 -

Autoloc sells these that operate with the original crank handle. Their # is: 1-866-470-7541 or their website is: http://www.autoloc.com
It is a bolt-on kit that is cable operated. Works especially well on flat glass windows.
Good Luck!0 -
FYI
Both Power Window Kits I bought came with Lighted Switches. AutoLoc is listed above but the other Kit I bought at www.jcwhitney.com.. Both have EZ Plug & Play Wiring where you cant get mixed up. Basically has 3
harness's; 1 with Fuse & Relay, then a Left & Right Harness.
The switch plastic Pods can be painted & screw in from inside door panels. The 'Handle' Type Switch is a Neat Idea. A friend of mine seen that type Power Switch in a Hudson at Turkey Rod Run last Fall and loved it.....
The Power Window Kit Install was pretty simple in hindsight requiring only a few tools and basic knowledge...0 -
I installed power windows in my pickup. I used the original window cranks installed on the 3/8 inch sq shaft from the switch assembly. The window crank will move up and down 15 deg to acutate the micro switches. I found them advertised in a Hot Rod mag. Easy to install and looks stock.0

That is a sweet way to go! And hidden (or some kind of "period" chrome) switch panel for the other 3 windows.
I have a PIC microcontroller to drive the lights (except headlights), and am replacing them with LEDs. Window and lock operation will be another thing the CPU can do.
This also means I can have the doors reupholstered before I do the windows, as I will not be adding switches and removing cranks.
This is a good plan. Thanks guys!

guys.....
How about us cranks out here, and a little help with them. Why does
my wing crank not work, and how can I fix it.

Hey Gramps, I think the back screw probably came out of the regulator and let the gears separate. That was the problem I found with mine at least when I took it apart. I had bought one from Bill that was complete, I took it apart and lubed everything then when I removed the one on my car I found the screw missing and at the bottom of the door. After lubing it I had two good regulators.I've got a spare for the Hash, not sure if they are the same but I'm thinking they are.If you need it, you can have it.

If it's a stepdown the problem is that the gear in the regulator gearbox is wornout. Bill Albright VINTAGE COACH, 16593 ARROW BL, FONTANA, CA 92335 909-823-9168 sells rebuild gearboxs and Gene Eshelman in Weiser, ID sells new gears. eshelman@ruralnetwork.net0 -
Thanx Mar55. After looking at the right one it's stuck.
Harry: Ask Bill if it will fit a stepdown. If not It's back to Vintage Coach anyway. You can PM me.0
