Arson investigators on scene at auto wrecking fireBy Louis Galvan/The Fresno Bee05/01/08 09:41:32

Arson investigators this morning returned to the scene of a blaze Wednesday night at Gil's Auto Wrecking in Orosi in which a large storage building was destroyed and about a dozen cars, including two restored classic vehicles, were damaged or destroyed.

Joe Garcia, a battalion chief with the Tulare County Fire Department, said the fire was reported at 9:21 p.m. at 13143 Avenue 416 and was reported as a house fire.

When the first units arrived, he said, they found a 1,000-square-foot storage building at the business in flames. The building, constructed of wood and tin sheets, was completely engulfed in fire.

Garcia said two classic cars in the building, a 1948 Mercury and a 1953 Hudson Hornet, were destroyed. About six other classic vehicles waiting to be restored and parked just outside the building were damaged by the heat, he said. Several other vehicles on the property also were damagee, he said.

The owner of the property and the vehicles was identified as Gilbert Quintana. The amount of the loss was not immediately determined.

  • And the residents cry out for a new law that makes damaging a Hudson a crime...

Seriously, how is it that communities allow people to own tinder boxes and hire people to work in or near them?
