"List of Hudson dealers" question
"Well, the club store did have a book by Lee Dodd's wife that listed known Hudson dealers, but I don't see it listed in the latest WTN".
This sentence was in a previous thread a couple years ago. I was wondering if this book exists? Does anyone have such a list of hudson new car dealers? Bill

The OMAHA Hudson Dealer was ROSEN - NOVAK. Big Hudson seller. The AMC dealer in South Omaha took over regional Hudson parts sales when Hudson became part of AMC. My buddy cleaned out the loft there over 10 years after the dealership closed. That was back in mid 70s. The Falks in Wilcox NE can answer the question about the dealers in NE. Charlie Harris should have the list you seek.

That helps Ken. I was also wanting to see if there is a national list. Since I do sales, traveling the western United States by car. I thought it would be interesting to see the cities and towns where these dealers were. Does anybody know how many dealers Hudson had? My dad's cousin, Vic Hebert was a dealer in Denver. Just some questions I was thinking about. Bill0

The book does exist but a new expanded or updated edition hasn't been put out. It was done by Lee Dodd and I have a copy. The dealer network during the step-down era was said to be 3000 Dealers strong in one add I saw. Many dealers were smaller though in rural areas and also sold farm implements. I thought it's be interesting to have a collection of badgest from those dealerships. One of the most famous Dealers was Jim Moran in Chicago. He passed away in FL. recently.0

The memory of Jim Moran (The Courtesy Man) lives on in my garage. I have a chrome Courtesy Motors trunk bag from a 48 Hudson.0

I have the original Irwin Hudson license plate frame for my 50 Pacemaker.
They were lcoated in madison, IN along the river. This is the same spot they have the big power boat race called the Madison Regatta.0 -
Although a lot of those dealer tags I've seen are diecast, need to be re-chromed or are pitted, I think they're worth having because it's a very specific piece of history and in some cases probably the only remaining evidence that some of those dealerships existed at all. As for the cars, ones that have those tags (not added on later) are very rare in that you can identify the original dealer otherwise you just don't know where the car came from when new. I think as a club we should make a little more effort to preseve the history of some of those dealerships while we still can before the people who worked at those places and remembers what they were like are gone.0

More than likely, the buildings occupied by dealers in small towns will probably remain on the scene while those in bigger towns and cities will probably fall victim to the progress imposed by the wrecking ball. If anyone knows of a building that housed a former Hudson dealer, they should take a few pics for posterity.0

Both buildings used by a Hudson dealer in Kennebunk, Maine, are still standing. A small brick building downtown is being used by the local water company as a storage building; the other is still being used as a garage. Been a garage for so long (since the late 30's) that it's grandfathered and "protected" - drives the yuppies moving into the neighborhood crazy. LOL They can't do a damn thing about it.
In defense of the owner he just put a ton of money into the place to make it look nice and he keeps any residual cars out back out of sight.

I used to hit a lot of the dealerships in the '60s. The 2 biggest "treasure troves" I ever encountered were still in business, Vic Hebert in Denver & the dealership in Billings, Mt. - both had been zone distributors. When you went into Heberts there were 2 stepdown convertibles sitting in the service area, they had 6 '46-7 PUs for parts delivery (were an AMC agency), and a used car lot with amongst other things, a '37 T panel delivery! First time we went there there was a whole pile of NOS pre-war sheetmetal by the street which was going to be scrapped!
The one in Billings owned 5 dealerships & when I went there, as did several HETers who heard about it, all the Hudson stuff (like being in heaven!!!) from all 5 was in the attic of a new building that was a Buick dealership. I still have a neon sign that had never been sold & in it's original shipping crate that I got there; it's now hanging & operational.
I bought out the entire contents of the dealership in Cortez, Colo. for $500, filling up a big station wagon & a pickup truck, with mostly NOS chrome, LOL!
Ah, "those were the days my friend"!0 -
Larry Wellman spent most of the 60's and early 70's cleaning out Hudson dealers in New England, New York and parts of Pennsylvania. I remember him telling me he offered $5 a box to clean dealer stock out - and they took it.
Larry had a large barn at his place with 3 floors packed with cars - so full you couldn't get the doors open. How he ever got anything out of the place remains a mystery today.
Larry was THE man to see for parts well into the 80's - he passed away in 1989 around the age of 50 - way to young. By then, tho, most of his parts stock had been sold off - I remember all that about all that was left were hard to move parts like A frames and suspension parts.

It would be interesting to see a book of some old Hudson Dealerships. The Hudson Dealer building in Erie Pa was not highly identified outside after closing. The facility evolved into a Yale and Towne Forklift Garage with a Body shop Business out back until around 1970, then it sat empty a few yrs until the redevopment Authority tore it down for a new block development.0

30 years ago I bought my 49 Brougham from a retired Hudson dealer in Wallingford, CT. "Lanson Brothers Garage". My brother Dan bought a 49 Commodore Sedan at the same time. The late Ron Cheeseman went with
us a bought about two or three pick up truck loads of parts. We also acquired several memorabilia pieces. here is a picture of the dealership from 19490 -
Ken: OK I bought my 57 Hudson Hollywood and my 53 Hornet Vert from
Ed Podewil Hudson dealer on N. Main Ave, San Antonio. His Son took over the business and moved to New Braunfels, where I bought my 1961 Rambler Wagon and 1965 Rambler 2 door hardtop. There was another Hud in there but only for 3-4 months, the engine froze.
Any history as to the Sons, whereabouts?0 -
The Oklahoma City Hudson dealership still retains its previous glory as part of Automobile Alley, which is where the dealers along Broadway were. This area fell into disrepair during the '60s through the '80s, and missed the "urban renewal" carnage of the day. Ironically, it took the Murrah bombing in 1995 to generate interest in the area. The bombing took place just one block West of Automobile Alley, and the blast blew out nearly every window of the buildings along Broadway, including the Hudson building, the Packard, Studebaker, Buick, Cadillac, and other buildings. The OKC Memorial and the resulting cleaning-up of the area renewed interest in the historic district. Some of the dealerships are now loft apartments or businesses. The Hudson Building has an original Hudson dealer neon sign (nearly 10' tall!) inside the lobby and visible from the street. It is now offices, but retains much of the '40s and '50s, especially.0
