37 fastner question

Hello all,

I am new to this forum but not hudsons. My first car in high school was a 51 commodore sedan. I drove a 49 coupe with hornet motor and twin H , 3speed overdrive for several years until I bought a 74 Matadore coupe. Also owned a 46 coupe and 47 pu. My favorite all time car was the 49 coupe. Anyway, got married had children and other obligations to take care of and sold all my hudson stuff. Kind of fell into Studebakers as an uncle raced them and my dad would buy used ones for his long drive to work. I have re-built several for different people and own a very solid 53hdtp and 64 pu that I need to finish.

Anyway, I have a customer bringing a 37 Hudson for paint and body work. The owner had completely taken it apart and sent out to a body shop, where it sat with almost nothing being done, then moved to another shop for a few years with nothing being done. I asked the owner to put together new fastners, nuts and bolts for reassembly. I have a copy of the 37 Hudson group parts list and can't tell if "nut plates" were used in the attachment of body parts.

Please enlighten me !!

I think several of us '37 owners could help you, but perhaps you could be specific. I don't know what you mean by "nut plates". Generally, they just used nuts and bolts except of course in the case of rear fenders which had captive nuts attached to the body by sheet metal.

U style or clip on nuts or J nuts would be a common autobody supply name. These "clip" to one panel and you screw a bolt into them, thus fastening the two panels together. Usually the bolts that are used have washers crimped onto the bolt and screw into the U nut.
  • I don't know about '37', but my '36' uses clip nuts to hold the body to the frame in several places and the tranny mount brackets that hold the rubber side mounts had them also. I sent some to Restoration Specialties to see if they had any, but no luck.

Here is what I believe you mean by J-Nuts: http://www.mrgusa.com/pdfs/74-77unut.pdf

I can't recall seeing any on my '37...or if there were any, they weren't that plentiful. I know that there are, what I'd call, "captive nuts" fastened to the inside of the body, around the rear wheel area, to hold the bolts that fasten the rear fenders on. These consist of nuts (they may be square) that are held in place by bend sheet metal straps which are in turn welded to the body.

On a 37T there are u nuts holding the body onto the chassis as mentioned, and also around the floor pan above the gearbox. Regards, Barry
