49 parts.. NEW MEMBER BEAR WITH ME
Hey all,
This is my first post on here. I have a lot of Chevies and have had a 49 Hudson barn find on the burner for a while. Well I am going to get started on it now and would like to sell the drivetrain. The classafied section wont let me log in. I was wondering is it ok to post for sale items on the main board? Some forums don't allow it so I dont want to anger anyone so I figured I would ask here.
Looking forward to learning a bunch from this forum, take care all!
see ya soon,
Jim

yes you can tell the forum what you want to sell in a post, this is the best site on the net. tell where it's at price etc0
-
Why in the world do you want to sell the power train?0
-
Why indeed! The power train is the best part of a Hudson. If you want people to look at it and talk to you at a show, you should keep it.0
-
Uncle Josh is right.
I went to a show last week and talked to a new Hudson owner. He had a 51 Pacemaker with original drivetrain fitted with a Chevy 250 inline six and TH350 transmission.
After driving the car on the interstate at 70+ mph all the way to the show, he realized the Hudson mystique was more in the handling than the engine.
There is abosolutely nothing wrong with the Hudson front end, I'd save myself alot of headache and use it regardless of engine/trans choice.

You can post a one time part for sale here.0

Thanks, Ted, for clarifying that. And thanks, Sewerat, for being conscientious enough to ask if it was okay to post an ad here. And welcome to the Classiccar Hudson forum!
Sewerat, I would echo Josh's thoughts on your power train. Of course, you may have definite ideas about what you want to do with this car, but as a new Hudson owner you may not be aware of all the parts and technical information that are still available for keeping these cars on the road. If you want to upgrade your engine and tranny that's fine, but don't do so merely because you think it's hopelessly antiquated or that parts are unobtainable. Most Hudsons running around nowadays are doing so under original power.
Also, if you want to sell the drive train, be aware that there is a much larger audience for your ad in the Hudson club's magazine. This forum is read by a few hundred people but the magazine has a circulation of 3500. If you want to place an ad there (for free) I would be happy to help you -- just e-mail me at HETdetailed@verizon.net (delete the HET first).
You should definitely advertise the stuff here, it's a great website...but don't neglect to post it in the magazine as well!0 -
Thanks for the replys. I got the motor running and it runs great. It has about 70K on it and I have no idea on the history of the up-keep. I took it around the block and the tranny was good but after I pulled it in the driveway the clutch went out. Here is the deal. I would love to keep the drivetrain, but I want to get it streetable for my dad to drive a bit to work (hour and a half commute for him). I am busy with two 55 Chevys and a 36 Coupe. I am worried about something going wrong way out and him being stuck, and getting a $300 tow. I was looking now for almost a year for an adaptor to put a TH350 tranny behind it but the adaptors are almost $500.00 if the motor goes out, to me it's a waste. I'm guessing a rebuild would be way more than a new mild 350/350 set up...
Does anyone have a cheap easy way to mate a Chevy tranny to the 262? If there are any I'm all for keeping the motor... I would love some of your ideas on this.
OH yea It's a 4 door and I did pull 2 door doors off of a junker in the yard. Has anyone seen a 2 door conversion on a Commadore before? I'm looking for ideas there also since all the locks and window regs are stuck and I'm not restoring this car just making it a relable driver...
Any or all ideas are wanted on all this...0 -
It sounds like a lot of work to convert a 4-door to a 2-door. Maybe it's easier than I think...but...had you considered just buying a 2-door (brougham or coupe), or maybe seeing if someone had one to trade?
Just a thought...0 -
Hudson's left the factory with GM hydramatics for their automatics in the '50's0
-
There are a few guys on the streetrod subforum that are converting 4 doors to 2. There are some good pics and ideas there.
As far as the Hudson engines, they are solid. With the regular maintenance, they are reliable and inexpensive to operate. You can put electronic ignition on them to eliminate point adjustment. There are two GM trans adapters that I know of, I believe there is a thread on those on the streetrod section as well.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Hey SR,
Just an opion, my .25 cents worth.
You're gonna beinvolved in more fabrication and labor than making the 262 work for your Dad.
In the past, I've driven a 49 Commodore daily out of necessity for 3 years and yes I did have roughly 3K in the rebuild, but everything fit when I reinstalled it. The Hudson 6 is easy to maintain, dependable, tough, well built engines, with overdrive will cruise interstate speeds. I was never afraid to drive mine on long trips or short ones. One trip was roughly 3500 miles round trip, never had any concerns or problems. You meet a lot of nice people while driving your Hudson, folk that otherwise wouldn't give you the time of day.
In years gone by, I've built street rods and worked in a Studebaker restoration shop and these experiences have led me to believe that there are cars and trucks that are street rod material and those that are not. In my opinion Hudsons, along with a list of others, are in "not" list.
All this to say, if ya put a few bucks in the clutch, bug out the engine and drive it for awhile you and your Dad will be hooked. Will cost less to try original than to immediately rip every thing out and start the sbc way.
Thanks for allowing me to share,
Kim0
