Jet steering

How do you adjust the steering wheel play on my jet, do you have to take the adjusting lock nut off, then remove the plate (4 bolts) to get to the adjustment? :confused:The manual is not clear to me or I am just having another one of those senior moments.

Thanks, Barry Smedley

  • If it's like any other I've ever seen except the anceint stuff where they used shims, Loosen the outer lock nut and turn in the screw/bolt which ever it is locking in the center of it to reduce clearance. Being they wear most in the center on old stuff I aim for zero clearance with the steering wheel turned 1/8 turn less than far right and left and learn to live with what ever the center is or replace some parts if too bad. Check your adjustment with the lock nut tight. BUD

Barry, it is important that you remove the drag link when checking the steering play, as you can then feel the backlash in the drop arm. You need to take the dust cover off, which will allow you to lift the lock washer off. You can then trun the adjustment screw in. check the play of the drop arm in the straight ahead position. when there is zero backlash, re-install the lock washer and dust cover, and check through the whole movement that there is no binding. Good luck,

    Geoff.
  • Thanks Guys, another question, What kind of grease or oil is best for the the steering box. I use jack oil in my Crosley steering.

Don't ever use grease! The book specifies EP90 gear oil, but it is permissible to go up a grade to 140.
