Vapor lock blues

The 3 outlet filter was used on AMC cars from 1972 to 1989. They had the fuel return system. It's a fram filter part number G3593. It has a 5/16 inlet, a 5/16 outlet with a 1/4 outlet that is used for the return line. If you follow my instructions on how to install you will never have vapor lock again. One thing though, keep an eye on the filter before the electric pump because today's gas and some stations have junk in their tanks. Last year crossing the country I got gas in Maryland and 10 miles later I started to buck. Drove into a station and asked the guy to raise my car and the filter was black as coal. He had a filter in stock and let me change it. Charged me 10.00 dollars for the use of the lift. Walt.Walt, I wasn't getting the WTN in 2002 but it doesn't matter as I like having books. I'm not sure I've ever seen a three outlet filter, did you mean one in and two out? It will be cool now for the next week so I shouldn't run into vapor lock again for awhile. Summer is coming fast though and I want to be prepared. I don't relish sitting in the bicycle lane trying not to get run into again.

Walt, I had the same problem with Valero gas last fall. Now I see they are the largest gas supplier in the US. I think it was just the one station and I think they have a problem when it rains. I hate the thought of having that inline filter all the way in the back where it will be hard to check and harder to replace but I'll do it so that I don't have the vapor lock problem again. Did you use steel line for the return line? I guess this means I will have to drill a hole in the top of the tank for the return line. Does the filter mount on the body? If so I guess I will need a flex line somewhere along the way. Are you guys sure a dozen clothes pins clipped on the line doesn't cure vapor lock?

If you replace (fix) your mechanical fuel pump and get rid of the electric one on your fender you will cure your problem of vapor lock. If you do that and put 12 clothes pins on your fuel line, you will cure your problem of vapor lock. If you replace your mechanical pump, get rid of the electric pump on your fender, put 12 clothes pins on your fuel line, run a return line and paint your house purple, you will cure your problem of vapor lock LOL!!:);):D0

Just one note.. If you use an electric pump at the tank, I would recommend that you eliminate the mechanical pump. The reason for this, is that if the diaphram leaks in the mechanical pump, the electric pump will fill your oil pan with gasoline in a HURRY.. Not a good thing. I have seen the result of such a catastrophy.0

Harry, you only use the electric pump if you start to climb a hill in hot weather, or as a primer, if you let the car set for a couple of weeks. Turn your key on, start the pump, wait a few seconds and the car will star right up, then shut off the pump. If you stop for a coffee on a hot day, when you get into your car turn the electric pump on and drive away and a mile later shut it off. No chance of vapor lock. You do not use both at the same time except as stated above. I use the AMC fuel pump which can pull the gas through the filter, the electric pump and the filter before the engine pump. One thing all must remember, the correct gasket pack has to be used between pump and block. I've been a mechanic for 72 years, with Hudsons then AMC and am still building engines. Dear Walt...With all due respect, I read my WTN.0
