FYI: Traveling Through Tennessee

While many of us (residents and visitors) are beginning to wonder if the Orange Construction Barrels/Cones have become the official state symbol, I did want to post an FYI for any forum visitors who might be traveling through Tennessee (especially those coming to the Pigeon Forge Meet in October).

At Midnight last night, I-40 through downtown Knoxville was closed for reconstruction by the Tennessee Dept. of Transportation, and will be closed for approx. the next 14 months. The interstate is being shifted several hundred feet away from a residential neighborhood and being expanded to three lanes in each direction.

Recommendations From The Tennessee Department of Transportation
  • If traveling East/West on I-40, take the I-640 bypass around Knoxville.
  • If traveling North on I-75 (which includes a section of I-40), take I-40 into Knoxville, pick up I-275 and then merge on to I-75 North.
  • If traveling South on I-75, use the reverse directions for traveling North. However, you can still merge on to I-640 West which will then take you to I-40/I-75 on the west side of town.
For more information, please check the project's website: www.smartfix40.com.

Thanx for the heads up, Bill.

While not a real problem - other than the heavy truck traffic scaring the bejeebers out of you in the area - construction on the I-40 (Hernando DeSoto) bridge between Memphis and West Memphis continues at the usual snails pace, on the West Memphis side of the bridge - they are, I think, adding lanes east and west bound over there.

Traffic flows fairly well thru the area, in some parts it is still 3-lane, but other parts it narrows to 2-lane. So use caution - just don't slow down to much or you'll get run over.

This construction has been going on for so long I think they've forgotten what they are supposed to be doing!!!!

  • Judy and I moved back to Knoxville in 1971 and the I-75/I-40 interchange has been under construction ever since. Was at one time known as MALFUNCTION JUNCTION.............come to think of it it still is......

Trouble with Noxiousville is, if you're going to west TN (or the other direction) there really isn't any way to get around the place - unless you come down 65 into Nashville!!! - And that ain't much better to get thru, even without construction.

Assuming you're coming from the north.
