backup light switch

My 51 Hornet has a single backup light on the rear.

A couple of years ago I replaced the Hydramatic with a manual O D. Recently I took a rare night drive and realised I didn't have any reverse light. Now I don't remember addressing that issue when I did the conversion.

Was a backup light switch commonly used on these models? If so, I could use some guidance as to its placement

  • I believe it was the same switch that was on the steering column for starter safety interlock

Here is a picture of an original back up light on a single lever transmission. (That is cut off speedometer above switch)

Thanks to everyone for the useful comments. I decided to take the easy way out and attach one of those vintage-style lighted "LITE" switches under the dash. It's manual, but it was easy and I didn't have to crawl around under the car. It even looks like it belongs under the dash!
