that lis not the type of crate that HUDSON used, looks like it was made much later BILL ALBRIGHT0
-
Auction flyer gives a serial no. on the motor, and it has the head on it. Don't believe thay shipped them that way, did they? Walt-LA0
-
The auction says the serial number on engine is 5325118. Let's go shopping!

That engine in the "crate" looks to me like it was taken out of a car - look at the crud on the manafolds and the side of the engine.

A 55-56 motor. Notice that it has the generator and all acc. on it. Doubt that it came from Hudson that way. Any chance it might be one of the motors that J C Whitney was selling. I remember them as being 56 motors.0
-
It looks like a pro crate job. It might be a JCW special or it's still in the crate from the engine rebuild shop. The right side of the block is suspiciously oily.0
-
My 52 Hornet has a 55 engine with SN 5320963. The listed engine must be 55-56 with 1/2 inch headbolts etc. Brent0

That looks like a shipping label on the top of the crate. Sure would like to be able to read it!0
-
It may be in a pretty crate, but I just see a used engine with a most of a Twin-H.0
-
OK, so someone shipped a used engine.0

I see a "new" engine in a crate. If you look, there is oil all over it,the manifolds, incl.the exhaust. The carb.heat tubes are still new,the bracket for the rear air cleaner doesn't look like it has ever had a air cleaner on it.I am trying to remember what WTN had an article in it,written by Charlie Nau,and it had Hudson engines, complete with generator, starter, distributor, wires, coil, water pump, fuel pump all accesories-etc.. ready to go for $180. from about 1956-57.I have a friend in the club that has one of these and his is NEW or NOS,and looks just about like this, including the caps on both carbs.,with an aluminum head.Look at the plug wires, look at the exh.manifold,no deterioration on it,the 2 front studs still have the pal nuts on the manifold. my friends engine looks like it had cosmoline or equivelent poured on it,about like this does.0 -
For those who have never seen a Hudson Crate engine prior to the original posting, see the following pictures of another Crate engine that was unearthed... note the same characteristics that Doc Doug pointed out. The engine in the auction is a Hudson replacement engine... without checking this is more likely a 56 vintage replacement as most of the 55 engines I have seen are painted Blue... purely a guess based on historic experiences.0
-
Replacement engines did NOT have serial/motors stamped on them, they were left blank.0
-
For those who read the auction flyer and assumed that the serial number for this engine is actually listed... this is an error. The numbers being quoted are actually found on the engine and are the casting numbers for a hi compression Hudson aluminum head and the intake manifold... search the site pictures and you will find pictures that show where the auction found the numbers.0

The JC Whitney engine:

forget the engine I want that '54 coupe haha...unless it needs an engine.0
-
I'm not familiar with non stepdown sixes, but the fuel line setup on that twin H is not standard step down. Looks like a Hash intake as well. Could very well be one of those JC Whitney crate motors. They were selling both 308's and 262's as I recall.
Anyone in the Dogwood Chapter area planning on going to the auction? Looks like it's near Charlotte on the way to Ashboro.0 -
OK, I have my $229 in my hand right now. Where do I go to pick up that engine?0
-
First, you need to invent a time machine...darn.

I am trying to figure out how many cars are really here,3 or 4 ?.Look at the front corner of the faded red car and it has lights for a 52-3 ?,or are my eyes decieving me?. My eyes are failing me-Now that I'm 50!!!0
-
I am planning to be at the auction as I live 10 miles from the sale site. The cars were there for years and years, but were few people got to see them. I have heard about them but never was able to talk to anyone that got to see them.
I will try to get in before the sale and get more info.
The 308 would look nice in my pick-up!0 -

I've got one. It's broke though, only goes forward at normal speed. Unless you run it on large amounts of alcohol, but even then you can only skip forward to the next morning.0 -

Better try boosting the octane rating of that alcohol.

Anyone else see the red car is not a '51?? If you go to their website, you can look at the left lower grille molding and it is '52-53?.The green Hornet is a sd.and looks to be a '51,then the '54 cpe.,a 51'next to the red car.The green '51 is in a different location. I think they say there is only 3 cars?
